It started with my mom.
A few years ago my mom — in her 70s — broke her ankle and her knee at the same time. What followed was months of recovery: doctor appointments, physical therapy, follow-ups. She needed help that went well beyond what her insurance covered.
I'd help her into her wheelchair, lift her into the car, then steady her with her walker so she could get into the appointment. There were lots of people in those waiting rooms who clearly needed the same kind of help — and many didn't have a son or daughter who could be there.
And it started with my dad.
My dad passed away a few years ago. In his retirement, he worked part-time for a senior alliance — driving the same passengers to dialysis, to physical therapy, to their regular appointments. Same routes. Same faces. Week after week.
He wasn't just a driver. He was someone they could count on — a familiar, kind person who showed up. That kind of relationship is rare, and it matters more than almost anything else we could give them.
